As We Fade transforms movement into an evolving field of light and particles. As visitors move through the space, their gestures disturb and reshape the projected environment, creating a visual record of their presence.
01 — concept + influence
A study in fading
As We Fade explores the fleeting nature of memory through movement, light, and particles.
Inspired by the luminous, ephemeral forms of planetary nebulae, the visuals transform particles and light into an environment that is constantly shifting and fading.
02 — The installation

The installation combines projection, fabric, depth sensing, and sound to create an environment that responds to each visitor.

03 — interaction + system

The project uses Touch Designer to generate dynamic particle effects that mimic the movement of gas and dust in space. To create the particles representing stars in the universe, we used particle GPU from the palette in Touch Designer, point clouds, and a 3D scanned file. To create interactivity with the audience, we utilized an Azure Kinect camera to track the movement of the human body, causing the particles on the screen to scatter in response to the viewer's motion.

Kinect tracks the visitor’s movement and translates their position into changes within the particle field. Built in TouchDesigner, the system transforms physical movement into a constantly evolving visual response.
*The system runs in real time, allowing each viewer to produce a unique visual experience.
